Welcome to Kersey Guitars. Based in St. Albans, Hertfordshire, we specialise in all aspects of Luthiery and guitar repair. From setups and servicing, to restrings, truss rod adjustment, re-frets, neck resets, snapped headstocks, resprays and bridge replacements. We also offer an amp repair service and specialise in custom guitar builds.
Since moving into our new workshop in Symondshyde Farm we are now taking on even more work and have plans to grow our list of services. We are also surrounded by a group of amazing local businesses which we plan to work with to build upon the already vibrant local community.
My love of guitars began in my early teens when I was first introduced to the instrument at school. It didn’t take long (with initial dismay from my parents), before curiosity got the better of me and I started taking them apart to try and figure out how they worked. Fast forward 5 years and I enrolled at South Thames College, London, on their Guitar Making course. I studied under the extremely talented Mike Hobbs, and spent 2 years learning the principles of acoustic and electric guitar construction and tool making.
After studying at South Thames, I started working for DHJ, a renowned cabinet makers in London. It was here that I learnt advanced machining and production techniques, that have become part of my day to day processes in the boutique guitars that I produce.
The next step in my journey was to train under St. Albans based guitar tech, Pete Gent. Pete has over 40 years of experience in guitars and all manner of musical equipment. It is fair to say if Pete hasn’t seen it, it didn’t happen. The repair and maintenance skills I have acquired through working on guitars every day with him has meant I understand far more about the instrument and its quirks than I ever would have done on my own.
My goal for Kersey guitars is simple, I want to “keep you playing”. Every guitar no matter how expensive, or not, is subject to change. It can be a frustrating time when you don’t have your much loved instrument, so giving it to someone who can provide peace of mind is very important.
I pride myself on being approachable and offering honest, friendly advice, as well as having the passion required to make each job, be it a custom guitar or simple repair, something that brings you value and ultimately gets you back doing what you do best – making music!
